You can check your blood pressure at the Health Gate Pharmacy if you think you may be at risk of high blood pressure or if you haven’t checked it in a while. You do not need to make an appointment, and our pharmacy has separate consultation rooms where you can check your blood pressure and discuss the results and medication with your pharmacist.
If you have low or high blood pressure, your pharmacist can talk to you about if there are any lifestyle or dietary changes that could improve your blood pressure or your overall risk of heart disease.
If your doctor has prescribed a medication, your pharmacist can help you use it safely and successfully and help you know your options for heart health.
How does it work?
A digital blood pressure monitor uses an air pump to inflate a cuff surrounding an upper arm or a wrist with sufficient pressure to prevent blood flow in the local main artery. This pressure is then gradually released using a digitally-controlled solenoid valve until the moment that the blood begins to flow through the artery.
The blood pressure measured by a pressure sensor at this point determines the systolic pressure. Pulse rate is also sensed at this time. The measurement taken when the blood flow is no longer restricted determines the diastolic pressure. This complete measurement cycle is controlled automatically by the micro-controller.
